FIELD NOTES / BEFORE BUYING

Is Valor Mortis worth it for your play style?

Consider it if you enjoy learning parry timing and want a first-person soulslike. Be more cautious if camera awareness, repeated ambushes or a large weapon roster are priorities. That recommendation synthesizes named PC reviews; it is not our firsthand review.[1][2]

Match the reviews to what you enjoy

Your preferenceWhat the reviews suggest
Parry-focused fightsTechRadar praises the feel of deflections; Destructoid’s Rapier-focused review also makes parrying central.
Napoleonic horror and explorationDestructoid strongly values the setting and connected spaces.
Clear awareness in crowded fightsTechRadar finds the first-person restrictions awkward in some encounters.
Few ambushes and little repeated trial-and-errorBoth reviewers describe frustrating traps or enemy placements.
Many radically different buildsTechRadar calls out the limited arsenal variety.

Agreement on individual features is more useful than averaging the verdicts. The same ambush can feel tense to one reader and tedious to another.[1][2]

Check your platform before using a PC verdict

Both reviews cited here cover PC. Their experience does not establish current PS5 or Xbox performance. The developer’s launch notice separately acknowledges problems on some Radeon 7000-series hardware; read the symptom and support checklist if that matches your setup.[3]

Handheld buyers should use the Steam Deck report, which specifies a reported 30 FPS starting point and its limitations, rather than extrapolating desktop performance.

A practical buying decision

  • Buy for the combat loop if parry practice and first-person positioning are the attraction, and your platform’s current reports meet your expectations.
  • Wait for more relevant testing if a platform-specific fault would stop you playing. A favorable review of another PC is not a compatibility check for your machine.
  • If you already own it and are stuck, try the weapon decision guide and Lothaire route before deciding the difficulty is the whole game.
