FIELD NOTES / CONTROLLER SETTINGS

Controller settings: presets, remapping and rumble.

The launch-era options provide controller presets rather than individual pad-button rebinding. The developer says controller keybinds are being worked on for a post-launch update. Keyboard/mouse rebinding is a separate supported feature; it does not establish that the same menu can remap a controller.[1][2]

Choose a preset before changing Steam Input

Open Options, then Controller and Control Schemes to inspect the layouts available in your build. Choose the layout by the Dodge, Attack and Parry/Block actions you want to change. The illustrated PC controls guide documents this menu route.[3]

What you needRelevant option
Change several controller buttons togetherInspect the in-game preset layouts.
Assign one pad button independentlyThe developer’s 14 October reply describes this as work for a later update; check current official notes before assuming it arrived.
Change keyboard or mouse actionsUse the separate Mouse & Keyboard rebinding tab.

We do not promise an identical preset count across builds or platforms: the developer reply refers to two control options, while the PC illustrated guide lists five. The official FAQ confirms presets without fixing a count.[1][2][3]

How does Steam Input fit in?

Steam Input is a Steam-side controller translation/layout tool. It is separate from the game’s own control schemes. In the remapping thread, the original player had already tried a Steam layout and found the result worse, so it is not a universal substitute for native remapping.[2]

If you change a Steam layout, keep track of the original layout and test one intended action before remapping more buttons. A changed prompt or layout is not proof that every game action now behaves as expected.

DualSense on Steam: reported basic vibration workaround

  1. Before launching the game, enable Steam Input for Valor Mortis.
  2. Launch the game, then check that vibration and PlayStation button icons are enabled under its controller options.
  3. Test for basic rumble. If it does not return, record the controller, connection type, Steam Input state and build when contacting support.

These steps come from jamie’s answer marked as a solution by a developer. Replies distinguish basic rumble from native DualSense haptics and trigger effects; this procedure does not establish full adaptive-trigger support or describe PS5 behavior.[4]

Want separate weapon or ability hotkeys?

That is a different keyboard task. The WeaponRebind section covers a third-party author’s UE4SS solution and its tested-store limitation. It is not evidence that native per-item hotkeys or controller rebinding have shipped.

Evidence note

Official FAQ and Steam developer reply checked 16 October 2026. Launch-state information can change after a patch; no update date or universal preset count is asserted. The rumble workaround is player-reported, not tested here.
