FIELD NOTES / SHIELD BACKTRACKING

Shield unlocked: four places worth returning to.

After getting Shield, return to the poison camp in Valley of Ashes, the Ship Graveyard branch, Harbour and Shamble Street. These four documented stops cover a quest finish, two Amber-related returns and an Oathbound emblem. This is a selected return plan, not an exhaustive map of every poison cloud.[1][2]

Check the ability and your travel access first

The University supplies the later Shield ability used to pass the long poison crossings. If your Lantern destinations are temporarily unavailable, compare your current story state with the travel access checklist before interpreting it as a lost collectible.[1]

In a 16 October Shield-return discussion, a reply corrects “Shipyard” to Harbour; those are not interchangeable Lantern names. Use the named landmarks below rather than treating every poison branch as the same destination.[3]

Choose a return by the task you still need

Return pointLandmark and purpose
Valley of Ashes > The Other SideCross the poison into the camp and investigate the note/body. Continue through the train route for The Emissary’s red cloth finish.
Vale of Wrath > Ship GraveyardGrapple back toward the village, turn right into the poison field and inspect the immediately left balcony for a Butcher’s Carnage duplicate chest.
The Outskirts > HarbourTake the poison route to the side dock. The ship hold contains the key enemy; the key opens the nearby residence. Its upper floor contains the King of Smugglers journal and adjacent chest.
City of Orphans > Shamble StreetUse the river shortcut and left ramp into poison, then the house weak point to reach Adrien Cassell’s Eternal Guardsman encounter. See the emblem checklist.

These landmarks are documented in Gage’s endgame route. The Ship Graveyard and Harbour chests contain duplicates; do not count them as newly discovered unique Amber types.[2]

Harbour: separate normal order from a recovery claim

For the normal King of Smugglers sequence, the Cargo Manifest is found on cargo beyond the boat route from Ship Graveyard, before the Harbour key and residence journal stages.[2]

That sequence is a checkpoint list, not proof that re-reading a journal repairs a save explored in reverse. A player who cleared Harbour before reading the Manifest reports stalled progress, with no successful recovery reply at this check.[4]

Avoid restarting solely because a normal walkthrough does not match your order. This page has no verified recovery method for that out-of-order case.

Make the next trip specific

  • Need a quest finish? Follow The Emissary through its final cloth interaction rather than stopping at the camp.
  • Missing an emblem? Compare the actual emblem name in your inventory before revisiting Shamble Street.
  • Cleaning up Ambers? Check whether you need a unique type or an upgrade duplicate before repeating a chest route.

The ordering above is an editorial checklist by remaining task, not a measured fastest route. The crypt mentioned in the player reply is excluded because its exact objective and approach were not corroborated.

Evidence note

Four selected routes checked 16 October 2026. Location details are primarily a SINGLE_SOURCE PowerPyx route family; no firsthand Shield traversal. This page does not promise all locations, automatic quest recovery or a speedrun order.
